A Reflection on the No Kings Protest

Halloween came early this year.

Last Saturday, October 18, more than 3,000 people gathered in downtown Appleton to stage a mostly peaceful (if you don’t count the assault on my intelligence) protest.

This monochromatic collection of mainly middle-aged-plus women with hair colors that are not repeatable in nature bravely denounced the regal powers being exercised by President Trump. Most of the “men” at the event had the vacuous, death stare look of husbands who are forced to hold their wives’ purse as she tries on clothes in the Kohl’s dressing room and asks him to give his opinion if the dress she’s trying on makes her look fat (in other words a no-win situation).

 Of course, there was the placard content of the No Kings protest: STOP FASCISM, 8647, FREE PALESTINE, NO KINGS IN AMERICA. Such lucidity has rarely been expressed in modern political history. The best part of the event was the “man on the street” interview. This truly revealed the brilliance and understanding the protestors had of the meaning of the No Kings purpose.:

Question: “Why are you here today and what are you protesting?”

Protestor: “I’m here to protest against the fascistic policies of Donald Trump.”

Question: “Can you name me what policies or things Trump has done that are fascistic?”

Protestor: (Long awkward silence) “You know, reasons.”

Question: “Can you give me specifics?”

Protestor: “Stop triggering me” (runs off)

After two grueling hours of enlightening the public on the danger to democracy of the Trump presidency the protestors congratulated themselves on a job well done, collected their George Soros checks, stopped at Appleton Liquor to pick up a box of wine and went home to feed Tiger, Captain Whiskers, and Fluffy a bowl of Tender Vittles. It’s now time for the afternoon dose of Zoloft chased with a large glass of Franzia and then an afternoon nap where they board the trolley and gently slip away to the land of Liberal Make Believe.
