Do you believe in accountability and personal responsibility? Well, so do we.

Unfortunately, under current law, no person who is an employee of a public, private or tribal elementary or secondary school is liable to prosecution for an obscene materials violation. (By the way, “obscene material” is defined in our state statutes.) Unfortunately, many teachers and school librarians are putting books and other materials into libraries and even classrooms that, if you or I distributed them on a street corner, we would be subject to prosecution. Teachers or other school personnel who have an agenda that promotes lifestyles we would object to, can promote their beliefs with no fear of prosecution.

State Representative Scott Allen (R-Waukesha) has introduced legislation that would repeal the section of law that gives these employees immunity from prosecution. On December 5, The Assembly Committee on Education, chaired by Representative Joel Kitchens (R-Sturgeon Bay), held a public hearing on Assembly Bill 308. The testimony was compelling. Virtually everyone who came to testify, including teachers and school board members, gave compelling testimony in favor of the bill. You can view the hearing HERE.

Unfortunately, we are hearing that Rep. Kitchens may not be interested in moving the bill out of committee to the Assembly floor for a vote. You can help us change that. Would you be willing to respectfully ask Rep. Kitchens to give this bill an up or down vote in the Education Committee when they reconvene in January? Your letter, email, or phone call could make the difference in getting this bill on the desk of the governor.

Please contact Rep. Joel Kitchens as soon as possible…
