March 11 Local Candidate Forum

(from left) State Sen. Kristin Dassler-Alfheim, State Rep. Joy Goeben, State Rep. Nate Gustafson, State Rep. Shae Sortwell, State Rep. Paul Tittl, moderator Mike Thomas

Thanks to all who attended the candidate forum on Tuesday, March 11. A special thanks to Mayor Mark Herter for his welcoming remarks; our moderator, Judge Laurie Shaw; our two candidates for District 4 Alderman: Jeffrey Gulbrandsen and Tim Roberts; and our three school board candidates: Rob Schweitzer (who valiantly stood in for his wife, Holly Schweitzer, the actual candidate), Andy Thorpe, and Patricia Toney.

Video of the event can be found on our Facebook page.

Gulbrandsen and Roberts each introduced themselves and then took questions submitted in advance by the audience. Those questions addressed, among other things:

  • transparency and plans for direct conversations with constituents
  • their willingness to oppose other council members in order to best represent their constituents
  • what they considered to be the top one or two things the current council could do to improve.

The school board candidates then introduced themselves and answered quetions submitted by the audience. Those questions addressed, among other things:

  • how to boost academic excellence and students' motivation to do their best
  • what are your thoughts on sexuality in schools, including transgenderism, boys in girls locker rooms, etc.
  • what have you done to prepare yourself to serve on the school board
  • what is the current school board doing well, and what change do you consider to be most important.

Thanks to all of our audience members for being respectful and engaged! We think the biggest applause came during Andy Thorpe's closing remarks, when he said, "I voted for Trump all three times he won."
